Note: Since browsers tend to indent lists by varying amounts, turning lists on may result in Web pages
that are not identical to the original document. To ensure the most accurate conversion, do not use lists.

HTML supports ordered (numbered) and unordered (bullet) lists. Ordered lists are displayed starting
either with letters, numbers, or roman numerals. Web browsers have the annoying tendency to indent
lists, which means that text converted to lists won’t look the same as the original document. They also
use a specific font and size for the list numbers, so you may wish to avoid using lists to more
accurately preserve the look of your document. To prevent creation of all lists, click the “All Off”
button.

Create unordered lists when line starts with:[ •]
Unordered lists are typically displayed by a browser with a leading bullet (•), so this is the default
factory conversion setting. To specify a different character as the start of a bullet list, type the leading
character (or characters) your lists use into the text field. The bullet character may be entered by typing
“option-8”.

In order for text to be interpreted as a list, there must be at least some white space between the leading
characters and the list text. To make sure there is enough space, you should place a space character

between the leading character and the text in your document.

Chapter 4—Getting the Best Results

Terry Morse GoClick does a very good conversion job on most document types, although certain
applications present challenges. Following a few guidelines when creating your documents will help
make the best looking Web pages and prevent unwanted “surprises.”

Paragraph Justification

Most word processors provide the option to justify text in paragraphs. A justified paragraph lines up
the text along both the left column and right column. Most newspapers, magazines, and books use
justified paragraphs. To force the right edge of the text to line up, additional space is inserted between
words to force the right edges of the lines to match up. Although GoClick will accurately detect and
preserve justified paragraphs, Internet Explorer 4.0 displays justified paragraphs as left-aligned.
Therefore, un-justifying all text in a document is recommended before converting to a Web page.

If you really want to convert justified paragraphs, be sure that your document’s minimum word spacing
is set to 100% or more. Browsers display word spacing of at least 100%, so lines with tighter word
spacing may appear longer in a browser. At the worst case, the lines may extend off the end of the
page.

“White Space”

GoClick looks at the layout of a document’s printed page to decide how to build the Web page. It
doesn’t have the advantage of seeing the original document’s paragraph breaks or column structure to
help make its decisions. Instead, it looks at the white space between objects in the document to guess
what layout was intended. If the white space between objects is very small, GoClick may not notice the
separation and mistakenly run objects together. To prevent this, it is best to provide adequate white
space between columns and graphics (1/4-inch is usually enough spacing).

Kerning and Tracking (QuarkXPress & PageMaker)

Kerning and tracking are typographic methods that modify the normal spacing between characters (the
two most common programs that perform kerning and tracking are QuarkXPress and PageMaker).

GoClick looks at the spacing between characters to decide where space characters should be added to
the Web page. Since kerning and tracking change the character spacing, using it may result in your
Web page having spaces in the wrong places. Also, kerning forces a document to be printed one
character at a time, which can be very slow. Kerning and tracking are not supported in HTML, and

nothing else will foul up a web page conversion more than kerning or tracking. Therefore, turning off
the kerning and tracking
in QuarkXPress and PageMaker is stronglyencouraged.

If you are using QuarkXPress or PageMaker, select all of the text in a document and ensure that
kerning and justification are not used. In PageMaker, you should pull down the “Type” menu, select
“Expert Tracking”, then the sub-menu item “No Tracks.” In QuarkXPress, pull down the “Style” menu
and select “Track…” The following dialog appears:

Make sure that the dialog shows the number “0”.

QuarkXPress also contains an auto-kerning option. You should also be sure that auto-kerning is turned
off. Open the Typographic Preferences dialog and un-check the auto-kern setting:
