Terry Morse Myrmidon looks at the spacing between characters to decide where space characters should be added to the Web page. Since kerning and tracking change the character spacing, using it may result in your Web page having spaces in the wrong places. Also, kerning forces a document to be printed one character at a time, which can be very slow. Kerning and tracking are not supported in HTML, and nothing else will foul up a web page conversion more than kerning or tracking. Therefore, turning off the kerning and tracking If you are using QuarkXPress or PageMaker, select all of the text in a document and ensure that kerning and justification are not used. In PageMaker, you should pull down the "Type" menu, select "Expert Tracking", then the sub-menu item "No Tracks." In QuarkXPress, pull down the "Style" menu and select "Track..." Make sure that the dialog shows the number "0". QuarkXPress also contains an auto-kerning option. You should also be sure that auto- kerning is turned off. Open the Typographic Preferences dialog and un-check the auto- kern setting: |
